Costain prepares to start work at Ambergate

Contractor Costain is preparing to start earthworks to replace Europe’s second largest covered reservoir at Ambergate in Derbyshire.

Costain will be replacing the 110M litre reservoir as it approches the end of its lifespan. The firm will be constructing to new reservoirs totalling 137M litres for client Severn Trent supplying water to Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire.

“We have to build the largest reservoir we can – about 87M litres – on the space available to us elsewhere on the site,” said Costain project board member Simon Roberts.

“Once we can commission this new reservoir, we can take out the old one and build a new one in its footprint for the remainder of the capacity – 50M litres.”

Junction improvements will be made to the A610 as part of the project to make deliveries easier. A concrete batching plant will also be built on site.
