Cooling entry deadline approaches

DEADLINE FOR entries to this year's BGA Cooling Prize competition for young geotechnical engineers is 30 January.

Open to those under 27 years old on 31 December 2004, the competition aims to encourage young engineers to write and present their first technical paper.

Entrants should submit papers of less than 2,000 words on any topic dealing with the engineering behaviour of the ground. Supervising civil engineers or geologists are urged to encourage their young geotechnical staff to enter.

Following selection, the finalists will present their papers to a panel of three judges on 16 March at Glasgow University at a meeting hosted by the Scottish Geotechnical Group.

The winner will receive a £200 cheque from Ground Engineering, a cut glass decanter, plus BGA sponsorship to the European Young Geotechnical Engineers' Conference in September 2004.

Their paper will also be published in GE next year.

lFull details of the rules of the competition are available from Gavin Bowyer at the BGA, contact tel: 020 7665 2233; email:
