Simplex Foundations is installing 2,750 piles for a warehouse in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.

The work includes 2,100 flared head piles of 350mm diameter and up to 18m deep.

The flared heads are up to 900mm in diameter and are formed using a proprietary technique developed by Simplex which allows the pile and head to be cast as a single piece. A further 650, 350mm and 600mm diameter bearing piles are being installed.

Half of the piles are designed for ground heave and Simplex used two, 12m long T25 reinforcement bars per pile. Pile load ranges are up to 1,400kN in compression, 500kN in tension and 150kN in shear. The firm has been using four Soilmec CM48 CFA rigs installing 'a mile' of piles per day.

The 20,000 m 2warehouse for Asfordby Storage and Haulage will be 25m high.
