CONTRACTORS BIDDING to design and build London 2012's Olympic Park bridges must provide uses for temporary structures after the Games have finished, the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) said this week.
ODA infrastructure and utilities director Simon Wright told NCE bidders would gain a competitive advantage if they could provide commercially viable alternative locations for temporary bridges.
'In legacy [after the Games] the required capacity for bridges may be only 20% of that during Games time, ' said Wright.
'So there's no point building a permanent structure when you can build a temporary one that will be cheaper and reusable.' The ODA has split its Structures, Bridges and Highways contracts into seven lots, four of which are currently out to tender. Of these, the lot for rail bridges requires a temporary road over rail structure.
Further temporary bridges will be required with the final three lots.
Wright said he hoped the temporary structures would be similar in versatility to Bailey bridges, although they would be more bespoke in their design.
Gifford director Peter Curran said that while he applauded the ODA's aspiration to identify end uses so early, this would require a massive amount of research by bidders. It would be more likely, he said, that a use would be found once the bridge was built and could be viewed by potential suitors.
'It could work out cheaper [to build a temporary bridge], but you would need to be very lucky in finding the right new location that closely matches the requirements of those of the Olympic Park, ' said Faber Maunsell technical director Charles Cocksedge.
Fairfield Maybey managing director Peter Lloyd said the use of modular components in temporary structures meant the ODA's requirements were entirely possible technically, the challenge would come in identifying potential sites so soon.
