Contractors sign up to e-commerce site

FIVE CONTRACTORS accounting for some 20% of UK construction turnover have signed up as equity holders in a new e-commerce venture, Arrideo.

Laing, Bovis Lend Lease, Amec, Kvaerner and Balfour Beatty are planning to use Arrideo, headed by Laing divisional chairman Jim Armstrong, as a platform for electronic tendering, procurement, contract and delivery documentation. It is hoped that internet-based communications will help improve business efficiency and contribute to better margins, said an Arrideo spokesman. The service is to become operational later this year.

Arrideo is part of global exchange platform AECventure, backed by Amec, Bovis Lend Lease, German contractor Hochtief and Scandinavian giant Skanska. Its launch follows the emergence of other construction industry e-commerce ventures.

These include the Construction Intelligence tie-up between Emap's Construction Plus and materials suppliers Travis Perkins and Wolseley.
