Contractor develops new deep injection underpinning system

FOUNDATION CONTRACTOR Uretek has developed a deep injection underpinning system which it claims is more successful, faster and less disruptive than conventional piling solutions.

The compensation grouting technique involves injecting resin at various depths to lift foundations with a thrust 40t to 70t per m 2.The firm says this can be precisely controlled and is also sufficient to overcome lateral resistance.It claims the system is suitable for treating most granular soils and plastic soils with up to 44% plasticity index.

The method has been used extensively in Europe, and is now included in Italian geotechnical specifications.Milan University geotechnical department carried out trials including dynamic probing, pressuremeter testing and laboratory testing.Uretek says this demonstrated 'significant long-term increases in soil bearing capacity of between 100% - 500%' A French insurance group also found that failure levels of the deep injection method (4%) were half those of piling underpinning solutions (8%).

Uretek UK has used the method to carry out several hundred repairs to domestic properties and large scale industrial buildings in the last three years and has proposed using deep injection to underpin 250m of wall on a large commercial building.
