Contract bridge

I read with great interest and pleasure, John Aldridge's article (NCE 20 October) in which he describes how design and build contracts have revolutionised the water industry over the last 15 years.

I have been retired for 23 years from bridge engineering and I know that after my paper to the Civils in February 1985, design and build contracts have been widely adopted for bridges and highways construction. I had not realised how its wider use was appreciated.

I recall with some amusement the hostility from some quarters which I met when it was first used in 1976 for Kessock Bridge in Scotland.
