Construction output fell 0.6% in the third quarter of 2011 and 4% year on year, official figures have revealed.
The 0.6% fall compares with an increase of 1.1% in the previous quarter and means construction was the worst-faring industry in the period.
The fall came despite an overall increase in UK GDP of 0.5%, according to the Office for National Statistics.
