Tough racing conditions at Rutland Water

Construction Industry Sailing Regatta sees close racing in big winds

A combination of strong winds and brilliant sunshine made for exciting and very competitive sailing at this year’s Construction Industry Regatta sponsored once again by consultant Pick Everard.

Rutland Sailing Club hosted the fleet of 34 boats. After three tough races in winds which started light but built to gust at times beyond force 5 (Beaufort Scale), it was the Fireball dinghy of Peter Gray and Simon Forbes which came out on top.

By clinching a final race victory, they pushed their Fireball-sailing rival crews of Ian Kelly/Pete Elver and Penny Gibbs/Ian Gibbs into second and third.

The regatta top honours were dominated by Fireball and Phantom dinghies. Top team on the day was the all-Fireball team from Stadia with the all- Phantom dinghy Seabrook Developments B team coming in second.

Ian Kelly also picked up the best placed over 45 year old helm in the regatta.

The racing was run by Rutland Sailing Club and the event organised by Jonathan Adams of Pick Everard, who put in some notable capsize practice during the regatta.

“Once the wind filled in we saw some fantastic sailing in outstanding weather conditions this year,” said Adams. “Construction dinghy sailors should put next year’s date in their diary now - we’re back at Rutland Water on Friday 2 July 2010.”

NCE editor Antony Oliver also took part this year’s regatta and managed a respectable mid-table result.
