TUNELLING

'There are several environmental constraints that we must work around such as nesting birds and water voles, ' says Hochtief planning manager Armin Krimpmann. 'We must take great care to reinstate everything.' Although not on the project's site, a pair of golden eagle chicks hatched nearby, about 9km south east of Fort Augustus. As part of a reintroduction project, the smaller of the chicks will be transported under a Scottish National Heritage licence to be released into the wild in Ireland, when it is strong enough to fend for itself.
