The first Caterpillar machine fitted with Cat's computer aided earthmoving system (CAES) to work in Europe is on a rehabilitation scheme in eastern Germany.

Contractor Wismut is moving 97Mt of contaminated soil from disused uranium mines into a 160m deep excavation which will then be capped. The D6R dozer is linked to a GPS system which shows actual position and how much material has to be cut or filled. A real-time display gives information as a 2D digital terrain model in the cab, also shown on a display panel in the site office.
