Common purpose

The European Commission has produced several Common Implementation Strategies (CIS) to create a co-ordinated approach to managing the demands of the Water Framework Directive. These cover both procedural and technical elements involved in river basin management. The strategies are being tested in pilot studies across all member states, including the UK. Spain, for instance, is testing river basin planning within the River Jucar. The Ribble provides the test for river basin management plans and public participation.

Others involve the Tevere in Italy, the Pinios in Greece, the Marne in France and the Somos through Hungary and Romania.
