Close encounters with civil engineering

I was delighted to see a picture of Yoda, Jedi Master, accompanying the article on mentors (NCE 25 May). There are, in fact, many similarities (apart from mentoring) between 'the Force' and civil engineering.

Yoda is an excellent example of a positive role model for young engineers. In fact my office has a similar picture of Yoda on its wall, emblazoned with his Jedi philosophy: 'Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.'

We find that these words of wisdom are as applicable to civil engineering as they were to Luke Skywalker during his Jedi training.

May The Force Be With You!
