A ROW over time overruns was this week threatening to stretch the budget for the $13.8bn Boston Artery, the US's biggest civil engineering project.
Project client, the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority (MTA) has been ordered by independent adjudicators to pay a joint venture led by contractor Perini Corporation $29M for time lost after it met unforeseen ground conditions.
The joint venture, whose other members are Kiewit and Jay Cashman, originally claimed $50M for loss of 434 days on construction of a $366M tunnel.
However the MTA project team had claimed that no days were lost The dispute resolution board set up to handle claims on the project awarded the joint venture $29M for 236 days lost.
The MTA now faces two further claims worth $92M from the joint venture. These are understood to cover extra materials and equipment needed to tackle the unforeseen ground conditions.
The MTA has headed off other claims from contractors by agreeing a settlement in return for a written promise that no further claims will be made.
Dublin Port Tunnel project manager Dr Gerald Bonner has resigned from client Dublin Corporation, returning to tunnelling projects in Greece where he worked before moving to Dublin. Dr Bonner is understood to have chosen to depart as the project enters a new phase after the completion of contract negotiations and before construction starts in April.
Shortlisting for a replacement is now underway.
