Client education is key to change

I enjoyed Stewart Rotherham's fantasy civil engineering story (NCE 17 January). So all we need to do is tell everyone how good we are, put our rates up and all will be well.

My experiences in the real world tell me that currently after steps 1 and 2 the client goes down the road to someone else who will do it cheaper, and he always seems to find someone.

My own belief is that Rotherham is right and the answer lies in the education of clients and that is where all our efforts should be directed. It seems pointless to address lack of supply and other issues, for if we cannot sort this many of us will not survive to care.
