Civils and utilities firms perform well in first carbon reduction league table

Skanska, Carillion and Atkins are the best civil engineering companies in the UK carbon trading and ranking system, known as the CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme, administered by the Environment Agency.

However, the top place for a key civil engineering firm was only just inside the top 100 of the more than 2,000 large firms eligible for the scheme. Skanska took 93rd place, followed by Carillion at 203 and Atkins at 221 in the league table, which was published yesterday. Other major civil engineering firms appeared lower in the tables, including Morgan Sindall at 381, Arup at 598, Mott MacDonald at 782, Balfour Beatty at 1,199, Costain at 1,218 and Kier Group at 1,245.

Energy regulator Ofgem took first place, a position it shared with 21 other organisations. Energy companies also scored highly, with ScottishPower leading in 27th place, and water companies fared similarly well, with Wessex Water scoring highest in 30th place.

The data forms a baseline for future years, when the league tables will also show overall carbon dioxide emissions, annual emissions savings and progress on energy efficiency. From 2012 organisations’ league table ranking will reflect year-on-year changes in carbon emissions — both in absolute terms and taking the growth of an organisation into account — becoming a public measure of what eligible organisations are doing to manage their emissions.
