China join EU Galileo positioning signal project

China last month joined the European Union's 30 satellite Galileo positioning signal project, which will supplement and extend the US's GPS system after 2008.

Transport, construction and mobile phones will all benefit from the system said China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation deputy general manager Fang Xiangming. China has made a E200M ($250M) contribution to the project.
