Busy bridge

Avonmouth Bridge opened in 1974, carrying the M5 across the Avon to the south west. A total of 1.4km in length, it comprises steel/concrete composite approach spans and steel main spans.

Currently 105,000 vehicles cross the bridge per day, 11% of which are HGVs.

The bridge was strengthened and widened between 1995 and 2001 by a Costain/Kvaerner Cleveland Bridge joint venture, supervised by Hyder. Atkins and RCS have been responsible for maintenance as Highways Agency Area 2 managing agent and term maintenance contractor since January 2001.
