The first of six tunnel boring machines (TBM) for London’s Tideway project has been delivered to site by barge along the river Thames.
The 1,350t TBM has made the 850km journey from Kehl in Germany where it underwent testing.
Tideway, which is building a new 25km long new sewer, dubbed London’s super sewer, has pledged to transport over 90% of materials by barge, reducing the number of road journeys by over 300,000.
Tideway chief executive Andy Mitchell said: “The arrival of our first TBM marks a major milestone for the construction of London’s super sewer and it also demonstrates our commitment to use the river to transport materials and reduce the number of vehicles on London’s roads.
“Our vision is to reconnect London with the River Thames and, by practicing what we preach, we want to demonstrate the huge potential of our city’s greatest natural asset.”
The TBM will now be reassembled over the next few months at the Carnwath Road site in west London. When complete it will be 147m long and 8.13m in diameter.
It is being named Rachel after Rachel Parsons, an engineer and advocate for women’s employment rights, who set up the first women-only engineering company in Fulham.
Tunnelling will start in 2018.
