Reinstatement of a West Coast Main Line station at Willesden Junction in north west London has been mooted as new way to ease pressure on Euston station.
Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation chief executive Victoria Hills said that among the opportunities for transport connectivity at the new north west London mega development was the reinstatement of a West Coast station at Willesden Junction, which sits at the edge of the site.
The development site, the largest in the UK, already is intended to be a major interchange between Crossrail and High Speed 2, with passengers from the north changing at Old Oak to get to Heathrow Airport and many central London destinations served by Crossrail.
Hills told an NCE100 breakfast club last week that the reinstatement of a West Coast Main Line station would add to the site’s connectivity and also ease the pressure on Euston.
The station served WCML trains until the electrification of the line in the early 1960s.
“Why put a superhub station here [at Old Oak Common]?” she posed. ”A station 90% of the size of Waterloo?” she continued. “t is, of course, because Euston can’t cope,” she said.
Enabling better connections for services at Old Oak and its surrounding stations would reduce this pressure, Hills argued.
“There’s plenty of room to put platforms back in there [Willesden Junction],” she said.
