Buro Happold to transform Olympic Games media centre

Consultant Buro Happold has won the contract to engineer the £100M transformation of the former London Olympics media centre to a new creative and digital hub for the capital.

London mayor Boris Johnson last week signed the deal between the London Legacy Development Corporation and iCITY, a joint venture between property consultant Delancy and data firm Infinity SDC.

The deal seals the future of the three-building complex, which originally cost £297M to build.

Delancey development manager Richard Palmer told NCE that Buro Happold, which worked on the original 2012 project with architect Allies & Morrison, will now team up with London-based architect GMW.

Palmer said the Broadcast Centre, which is the largest of the three buildings at 60,000m2 would account for the bulk of the contract.

“The building has been described as a big shed and that industrial aesthetic is what we are trying to celebrate,” he said. “We are going to re-clad three sides and expose the steel structure and create a well-lit space.”

“It’s a two storey building but each one is about 11m so we are putting in a mezzanine level, effectively doubling the space,” added Palmer.

Palmer said it would be a two stage tender and  he expected the pre-qualifying process to start “shortly”.

Under the new deal, Loughborough University will take 60,000m2 of the old Broadcast Centre creating a new Loughborough University in London.

BT Sport, Hackney Community College and Infinity SDC have also been confirmed as tenants, meaning 40% of the complex is already let. 

A planning application for the project is to be submitted by late summer and it is expected  that a decision will be made by the end of the year. Palmer said construction is expected to take two years.
