Building on design

Engineering director Andy Curzon heads up all the design and consultancy work carried out by BBRP's 200 designers at regional offices throughout the UK. He believes the type of engineering his teams are carrying out provides a great opportunity for engineers from various disciplines.

'While the traction power design work is heavily electrical engineering biased much of our electrification work is civil, structural and mechanical in its nature and of course the trackwork design is predominantly civil engineering, ' he says.

'As a company that designs and constructs we know that careful control of interfaces is critical, we therefore promote very close working between our designers and construction teams and encourage staff to gain skills and experience on site and in the design office.

The fact that we have to construct what we design improves our capability significantly and enables us to have an added perspective when we provide design only or consultancy services.'

He continues: 'Our network of offices across the UK are in many of the key railway centres and numerous project sites. Together with technically challenging and interesting work this provides the opportunity and flexibility that good engineers often want.
