Bruton resignation blow for ICE

THE INSTITUTION of Civil Engineers was hit this week by the resignation of one of its most senior directors, Mike Bruton, director of membership and human resources.

Bruton becomes the fourth director to quit the Institution in the last six months.

He follows communications director Alan Smith who resigned in September (NCE 14 September) to join contractor HGB and, more recently, international director John Whitwell and external affairs director Ian Moore who have both taken early retirement.

The director of membership is a key role carrying responsibility for education and training, including the professional review and continuing professional development.

Bruton joined the ICE from supermarket giant JS Sainsbury just two years ago, initially to manage the institution's internal human resources. He took on responsibility for membership following the departure of another director, Richard Larkham, 18 months ago.

Bruton will remain in his post while a replacement is sought.
