Brown shakes up university education

University and school education will be run by different government departments in Prime Minister Gordon Brown's new cabinet
The shake up is designed to ensure Britain has a highly-skilled workforce, a dynamic businesscommunity which seizes new technology and innovation opportunities and a world-class science base.The new Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) will be led by John Denham.'We must strive to build a workforce able to compete in a highly competitive global market. I recognise that enhancing our already world-class scientificresearch and successfully exploiting cutting-edge innovation are also at the heart of global success,' he said yesterday.'This new department which will bring together these key elements will help Britain stay at the forefront of the global economy in an increasingly competitive world.'
