HONG KONG has kicked off the development of a new £420M bridge link to mainland China.
Last Friday it asked 12 consultants to submit expressions of interest for the detailed design and construction supervision of the Hong Kong section.
Strongest contenders include British consultants Maunsell, Ove Arup, Halcrow and Mott Connell.
Maunsell is already part of a team designing the Tsing Lung bridge, Ove Arup is detail designer for the Stonecutters bridge and Halcrow was part of the team which won the international design competition for Stonecutters. Mott Connell designed the Lantau link.
The new 5.4km bridge, called the Shenzhen Western Corridor, is the first infrastructure project to be jointly carried out by the Hong Kong and Shenzhen governments.
Work will be undertaken in two sections. Hong Kong’s highways department is responsible for the section between Ngau Hom Shek in Tuen Mun in the north west New Territories, and the edge of Hong Kong waters.
The mainland authorities will build the section between Nanshan, close to Shenzhen, and the water boundary.
Maunsell and Halcrow are involved in separate teams bidding for the Chinese section.
The two sections are similar, featuring a viaduct from the coast, a 300m cable stayed bridge to provide clearance for a marine navigation channel and another viaduct where the two sides of the structure meet.
The Hong Kong section totals 2.9km and is estimated to cost £243M, while the mainland section is 2.3km long and is estimated at £177M . The Hong Kong Highways Department plans to start construction in 2003 with completion in about 2007.
