Bridge baffler

I know Upton-on-Severn reasonably well, but I completely failed to understand the article 'Fast track viaduct wins West Midlands prize' (NCE 23 June). Is the 170m viaduct really on the 'same alignment as the original 1939 structure', and if so, was a temporary bridge installed?

If there was a 'neat solution to a very real problem', it surely deserves a rather more comprehensive report.

John Constable CBE (F), 12/14 Church Street, Pershore, WR10 1DT
