BRE acquires Ceequal

The BRE has acquired rival sustainability accreditation body Ceequal and is to create a single standard for the civils industry.

Ceequal today transferred its business operations to BRE Global, signalling the start of a two-year process of creating a certification scheme that merges Breeam with Ceequal.

The move was said to be in response to industry demand.

BRE chief executive Peter Bonfield said: “Our long term aspiration with a single scheme is to bring together the significant experience and expertise behind the two rating systems to deliver enhanced environmental and social benefits for civil engineering works and better economic outcomes that benefit society and broaden uptake in the UK and international markets.”

It is not yet decided what the new initiative will be called.
