Bracing treatment


A 133-YEAR-OLD heavily skewed five-span rail bridge on the busy Victoria to Brighton main line near Battersea Park in south London is being infilled with lightweight concrete.

Balfour Beatty Construction is placing more than 4000m3 of foamed concrete on top of an 8m high reinforced pulverised fuel ash embankment to encapsulate the decaying wrought iron deck structure and reduce long-term maintenance.

The infill sits on a geotextile-reinforced granular distribution layer which transfers loads to more than 1000 CFA piles up to 19m long.

Client Railtrack Project Delivery (Southern) chose this solution to minimise disruption, as most of the work can take place without disturbing the original structure.

Main design and build contractor for the £2.7M project is Rail First and structural engineer is Gifford & Partners.
