BIM and the UK construction industry: meeting the government’s challenge one year on

One year on from the government’s decision to mandate the use of Level 2 Building Information Modelling (BIM) on all publicly procured projects by 2016, NCE joined forces with software provider Bentley in September 2012 to host a webinar to discuss the steps that the construction industry has taken - and still has to take - to prepare for the deadline.

Speakers set out their personal and professional vision for the use of BIM as a tool to boost efficiency and quality in the delivery of infrastructure projects and the management of assets across the whole lifecycle. This will draw on recent practical examples of successful use of BIM and the challenges of embracing new ways of working.

The discussion identified and talked through these examples of good practice already established in the industry and the steps being taken to share the learning more widely across the profession.

Reference was made to the government’s BIM working group and the work it is doing to ensure that government clients are taking the appropriate steps to drive forward the use of BIM through the life of assets and what they are doing to work with the supply chain by establishing systems and information flows that underpin the use of BIM.

The panel talked through the challenges of meeting the government’s 2016 deadline and identified the potential steps that will have to be taken to ensure that BIM becomes part of the future for efficient government procurement, project deliver and asset management.

Speakers included:

  • Andrew Wolstenholme - chief executive, Crossrail
  • Mark Enzer - engineering director, Mott MacDonald
  • David Philp - head of BIM implementation, Cabinet Office
  • Phil Jackson - Chair of the Institution of Civil Engineers , Information Systems Expert Panel, Bentley Systems
  • Antony Oliver – editorial director of infrastructure, editor of NCE
