BIET was this week empowered to decide its own destiny. Cockshaw told board members to chart the way forward towards its eventual wind- up. 'You must decide what is right for you,' he said. 'You know more about it than I do.'

The board was formed in 1989 following the merger between ICE and the society of civil engineering technicians. It has always been intended to wind BIET up once full 'vertical integration' has been achieved.

This process was highlighted by the Future Framework Presidential Commission which recommended that ICE membership should be inclusive to all members of the civil engineering team.
