THE BRITISH Geotechnical Society is hosting the International Young Geotechnical Engineers Conference, based at the University of Southampton from 8-13 September.
Intended to mark the new millennium, the Southampton gathering is a one-off event that replaces the regular continent-based regional YGECs.
Supported by the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering, it is fitting that Britain is the host because the YGEC concept was developed by Professor John Atkinson at City University in 1981.
Each national society within ISSMGE can nominate two delegates at a special subsidised rate of £100. Additional delegates are welcome at a rate of £300, although under ISSMGE protocol applications have to be made through the national societies, and it is anticipated that such applicants will be supported by their companies or through local sponsorship.
