BGS digital map is world first

THE WORLD'S first digital geological map of an entire country was unveiled by the British Geological Survey in December.

Simon Winchester, author of The map that changed the world , a biography of William Smith (GE October 2001), launched the map of the UK at the BGS annual stakeholders meeting in London.

'It is appropriate that William Smith produced the first geological map in the world in the UK and 200 years on the BGS has produced the first digital geological map of an entire country, ' he said.

The multi-million pound DigMapGB (GE April 2001) identifies a variety of geological hazards such as radon, subsidence and flood risk areas.
