Better procedures needed for stranded trains

Network Rail and train operators need to improve proceedures for stranded trains, accident investigators said last week.

The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has called for Network Rail and train operators to improve proceedures for stranded trains. RAIB’s recommendation comes investigation in train which was left stranded for almost three hours between St. Pancras International and Kentish Town in north London last year.

On 26 May 2011 a First Capital Connect (FCC) service from Brighton to Bedford lost power and became stranded after leaving St. Pancras International station during the evening rush hour. The busy train had about 700 passengers and after 40 minutes the public address system and air conditioning stopped working resulting in some passengers leaving the train and walking along the track to safety.

It took almost three hours before passengers could board an adjacent train and carry on with their journey. RAIB’s report found that lessons had not been learnt from a number of similar incidents on the section of line between 2009 and 2011.

Network Rail and the Association of Train Operating Companies have responded to RAIB’s findings by publishing a new guidance document - Meeting the needs of passengers when trains are stranded’.
