Beitun City Case Study

Client The Chinese Government
Masterplanning Joint venture between Buro Happold and architectural practice Barton Willmore
Site Area 2500ha

Buro Happold provided the engineering input for the masterplanning of a new city in north western China. The intention is to increase the population of an existing town from 30,000 to 250,000 over a period of 20 years.

"So much of this is a new space, there's an opportunity to get it right from the beginning," says Buro Happold infrastructure group director Daryl Johnson.

"For example, when looking at water, we could improve a lot of things at once; ecology, river quality, insect problems, flooding. We used one huge integrated strategy."
