For the third year running the BCI Major Project Award has attracted a large number of entries, reflecting the substantial amount of big civil engineering and building projects currently in hand.
Twenty projects each valued at over £50M were submitted for the 2002 Award. Of these, seven were shortlisted by the judging team.
As in 2001 this was one of the most strongly contested categories and all of these projects are also competing for BCI Best Practice Award sponsored by the Construction Best Practice Programme.
The results will be revealed at the London Hilton on 23 October and published in NCE, The Daily Telegraph and the architect's journal two weeks today. Mike Winney reports.
Channel Tunnel Rail Link Section 1 C430 - Ashford, Kent This 15km length of CTRL includes 5km of part cut and cover, part elevated transit of Ashford town centre, connecting with its existing railway hub. Heavy construction and extraordinarily complicated phased working were needed to modify existing live railways and mesh new flying junctions from CTRL to the existing International station.

Work, including conversion of a Victorian battleship dock, began in November 1998.
A heavily reinforced concrete structure was built within the dock along with a concrete caisson for cooling the reactor core water and treating decontaminated water, plus extensive building works and services subways. Temporary works involved construction of a cellular cofferdam to retain the dock basin during excavation.
Reinforcement was placed by 100 steelfixers working six dayshifts and five nightshifts.

Phase one was completed in March in good time for the Commonwealth Games.
The Manchester Stadium was planned from the start with an afterlife. Removal of the running track and games field, and the addition of another section of Chiswick Park, London W4 Chiswick Park is a landscaped office complex built to very high standards on the site of a former bus works. Phases 1 and 2 consist of 7ha of office space in six similar four storey blocks with undercroft basement car parking.
The inner garden is landscaped with extensive lakes, waterfall and planting with mature trees.

There are separate zones for wards, diagnosis and treatment, and ambulatory care which have been arranged to make centralised clinical services easily accessible.
Wards and 12 single rooms are arranged for maximum visibility by the staff. Non clinical services such as catering and physiotherapy are all arranged to be adjacent to the ward blocks. Practical and attractive design features include naturally lit recovery areas beside the operating theatres.
Client: Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital Cost: £229.2M Principal designer: Anshen Dyer Architects Contractor: Laing Other firms: Octagon Healthcare (PFI consortium) GSK House, Brentford GlaxoSmithkline's brief for its global headquarters was the creation of a modern landmark office which would be flexible to accommodate unspecified future needs, have an atmosphere that would stimulate a 'creative and integrated business culture' and be constructed to a budget of £220M.
The designers were integrated with the co-located management team and shared an IT network with all consultants, construction managers and trade contractors.
Work was driven at a fierce pace by a milestone programme while construction ran in parallel with the detailed design.
Client: GlaxoSmithkline Cost: £210M Principal designer: Renton Howard Levin Partnership Contractor: Mace Other firms: Hillier Group, WSP South (engineer), Swanke Hayden Connell (internal fit out design) Lowestoft Waste Water Treatment A 'rustic marine' design was chosen for reconstruction of a pretreatment works at Ness Point outfall headworks. Sewage flows are intercepted there for pumping to the main treatment works which is enclosed by a landscaped dome roof measuring 130m by 160m.
Gas containment and odour control have been given the highest priority to ensure a safe working environment within the dome. It is hard for the casual visitor to recognise the plant's true function.
