BCI Awards Civil engineering shortlist

Nine projects were selected by the judges from the 21 entries for the BCI Civil Engineering Award 2002 for schemes valued at between £3M and £50M.

This week NCE presents a brief summary of each one.

They include a cluster of projects that have already gained national acclaim.

All civil engineering finalists are also eligible for the Construction Best Practice Award which is sponsored by the Construction Best Practice Programme.

Two are also shortlisted for the Prime Minister's Award for Better Public Building which is for publicly funded buildings and infrastructure. This Award, launched in 2000, is jointly sponsored by the Commission for Architecture & the Built Environment, and the Office of Government Commerce.

Winners and commendations for all the awards will be revealed next month at the BCI Awards dinner on 23 October at the London Hilton and published in NCE, the architects' journal and The Daily Telegraph on 24 October.

Anderton Boat Lift Restoration The hydraulically operated Anderton Boat Lift, which connects the Trent & Mersey Canal and Weaver Navigation over a 17m level difference, was replaced in 1908 by a massive steel structure supporting an electro-mechanically operated lift tank arrangement.

This was closed in 1983. The lift has been restored to near its original hydraulically driven mechanism.

Martin Clarke, project manager, Anderton Boat Lift Other firms: Aspen Burrow 14 Dock Upgrade, Devonport Royal Dockyard Upgrading work to provide a seismically secure environment for carrying out critical servicing operations on nuclear submarines at Devonport's 14 Dock was completed within a challenging programme and under budget with about £3M savings against the previous upgrade of 15 Dock.

Strengthening of the dock absorbed 30,000m 3of concrete, 5,033t of reinforcement and 36,000 couplers.

Drillservice Gateshead Millennium Bridge Also shortlisted for Prime Minister's Award Gateshead wanted an iconic, regeneration inducing, foot and cycle bridge crossing the Tyne at quayside level downstream of the river's swing bridge and high level rail and road crossings.

It has achieved that with its 'winking eye' rotating balanced tied beam structure - a novel, architecturally driven concept that has created a new aesthetic for bridges.

The complete superstructure was assembled down river and carried to site by a floating crane.

Kingston Bridge Widening & Strengthening, London What began as a strengthening operation for Kingston-uponThames' busy crossing of London's river grew in to a widening project when it was realised that a temporary crossing needed to keep traffic moving would cost nearly as much as an addition to the permanent structure. A wide footpath, cycleway and bus lane are the bonus.

Strengthening was deemed necessary to upgrade the five span masonry arch bridge built in 1828 and its replica widening completed in 1914. New stone voussoir facings are exact replicas of the Client: Gateshead Council Cost: £22M Principal designers: Gifford & Partners;

Client: Royal Borough of Kingston-upon-Thames Cost: £9.5M Principal designer: Symonds Group Contractor: MJ Gleeson Group Other firms: Universal Stone Scarborough UWWTD Scheme Scarborough's new treatment works sited high on Yorkshire's Heritage Coast uses ultra-violet final treatment to go well beyond the demands of the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive.

It is disguised as a range of typical local farm buildings, including a derelict stone barn.

Three pipelines some 2km long carry sewage and air from the existing preliminary treatment works at Scalby Mills and return treated effluent to the existing outfall.

Client: Yorkshire Water Services Cost: £30M Tamar Bridge Strengthening & Widening, Plymouth Also shortlisted for Prime Minister's Award For about a tenth the cost of a replacement crossing and approaches Tamar has been strengthened and widened. Without increasing the deadweight the deck has been expanded from three lanes to four lanes plus a highway loading standard walkway cum cycletrack. All work was done with negligible interruption to traffic.

Client: Tamar Bridge and The Falkirk Wheel The Falkirk Wheel is dramatic, eyecatching and drawing crowds of visitors as if it were a theme park ride rather than simply a boat lift.

A design and build tender won British Waterways competition to replace the original 11 lock flight with a wheel and aqueduct to span the 35m between the canals.

Client: British Waterways Torbay Sewage Treatment Works The extended Brokenbury Quarry houses the treatment plant which is connected to the original sewerage system by a new 460m long 4.25m diameter tunnel and 50m deep pumping station.

Client: South West Water Cost: £42.3M Winscar Dam Repairs, Sheffield A 15 litre/second spring which erupted at the toe of the Winscar dam prompted the first use in the UK of a membrane liner as a repair for a major dam.

The new PVC based membrane was manufactured in Italy and consists of a green pigmented top layer heat bonded to geotextile.
