Barratt mothballs stadium plan

Barratt Homes has mothballed plans to build a new stadium for Brentford FC due to the “economic conditions”.

Barratt was set to build a new 20,000-seat stadium for the club in Lionel Road near Kew Bridge station.

But the club will now have to look to new ways of building their new home.

Plans for the new stadium included a hotel, health centre, sports centre for the site. The club also planned to sell their current Griffin Park home for housing.

In a joint statement Barratt Homes and Brentford FC said the decision had come as the economic environment was now “wholly different from when the site was secured”.

The club has been given the go ahead by Barratt to talk to other parties to build the stadium. It is also thought the club will have the option of buying the Lionel Road site, which the developer purchased three years ago.
