A BALFOUR Beatty/Carillion joint venture is expected to be confi rmed as the winner of the main works contract for the £1bn East London Line (ELL) next week.
The team beat rival consortium E-Link (Laing O'Rourke/ Amec Spie/Vinci) to the job.
Bidders were told on Monday who had won the job, but went straight into a 10-day standstill or 'cooling' period before the deal is signed on 20 October.
Transport for London refused to confirm the identity of the successful bidder, but a member of E-Link passed on its congratulations to its competitor via NCE.
The main works contract is worth £600M, with the majority of work focused on laying new track and signalling works.
Managed by Parsons Brinckerhoff, the main works contract covers phase one of the ELL project, extending the existing line to Highbury & Islington in the north and Crystal Palace and West Croydon in the south. Completion date is 2010.
Trains will run along national rail lines from West Croydon to New Cross Gate, where the existing ELL line will be converted from tube tracks.
Four new stations and a series of bridges and viaducts will be built on the north section.
The most challenging piece of civils work on the project is likely to be the Great Eastern 19 bridge, where the existing sixtrack concrete overbridge will be demolished and replaced with a steel truss structure on a new alignment.
Under a concept devised by Arup, the structure will be preassembled next to the site and launched into place over 52 hours, during a possession Christmas 2007.
Balfour Beatty/Carillion is expected to start work onsite once Taylor Woodrow has completed enabling works in November.
The project was a key part of London's 2012 bid, providing a direct link from north and south of the capital to the Olympic Park.
