Balfour Beatty to build £13M Crossrail train factory

Balfour Beatty has been awarded a £12.5M contract to build a production and testing facility for new Crossrail trains in Derby.

The factory for client Bombardier will measure approximately 250m by 40m, enabling it to handle four 10-carriage trains.

The work includes the construction of four multi-functional train lines, each with full length overhead lines, and inspection pits containing a range of services that will be accessible by rail at both ends, connecting into existing test track facilities.

The project will create office space in the form of a two storey annex, along with associated power upgrade works to the site for the overhead electricity lines.

Peter Commins, Balfour Beatty managing director for the north west, said: “Through our civils and building business we have a wide range of experience in creating this type of facility. We have been working very closely with our customer to ensure we fulfill their exacting requirements whilst maintaining a value for money solution and we look forward to assisting Bombardier in achieving their vision.”

The project is scheduled for completion in winter 2016.
