Balfour Beatty awarded Crossrail contract

Network Rail has awarded contractor Balfour Beatty a £130M contract to build overground track for the Crossrail project.

The contractor will install two, 3.2km of Crossrail track from Abbey Wood to the Plumstead Portal and modify bridges on the route to make space for overhead electricity cables. It will also construct a new station building at Abbey Wood with a dedicated Crossrail platform.

“The transformed Abbey Wood station will act as a catalyst for the regeneration of the surrounding area and provide opportunities for local employment, meeting the development aspirations of the two London boroughs it serves, Greenwich and Bexley,” said Crossrail senior programme manager Peter Mason. “We’re now looking forward to continuing our excellent partnership with Balfour Beatty rail to deliver this exciting project.”

Preparatory work will begin later this year before the main construction phase starts in 2014.
