ONE OF the machines used to excavate the Channel Tunnel could end up as reinforcement for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link project.
Steel reinforcement manufacturer Celsa Steel UK said last month it was planning to buy 800t of scrap metal recovered from the TBM from new owner Reclamet.
Reclamet bought the machine for £39,899 from Channel Tunnel operator Eurotunnel during a charity auction on the eBay website last month.
Celsa plans to melt down the steel and turn it into rebar, which it would then supply to two of its main customers. Both are 'major contractors' working on CTRL.
'We are negotiating the sale with Reclamet at the moment, ' said Celsa Steel UK market development manager Alex Small.
Celsa Steel UK bought the assets of Allied Steel in February 2003 and now claims to supply 50% of the reinforcement used in the UK market.
