Attachments make base rig multifunctional

Soilmec's drilling and equipment division was showing its latest range of oil and water well drilling rigs at Geofluid, but the group was also promoting its SM870 foundation rig, the largest in its fleet.

This 'multifunction base machine' can be fitted with a variety of attachments to carry out a wide range of applications including jet grouting, driven piles, CFA piles and the recently developed cased flight auger piles (Ground Engineering June). It can also be fitted with hydraulic grabs for diaphragm walling.

Soilmec's Leonardo Bertozzi says that the main advantage for customers is that they can buy one base machine and add attachments as needed at a much lower cost than a new rig.

A SM870 has already been used by Soilmec's sister company, geotechnical contractor Trevi, on the Boston Central Artery project in the US.
