Atkins to design water park in Abu Dhabi

Atkins has been appointed by Aldar Properties PJSC as lead designer for a new 16.4ha water park to be built on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Atkins has been appointed by Aldar Properties PJSC as lead designer for a new 16.4ha water park, which will feature more than 40 attractions, including four one-of-a-kind rides. The park will be built on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Aldar has committed to making the facility one of the most environmentally friendly and sustainable water parks in the world. Atkins, which was also responsible for Wild Wadi Water Park in nearby Dubai, is designing the park’s buildings to meet Estidama guidelines [sustainability programme in Abu Dhabi] and is engineering ways to dramatically reduce energy and water consumption.

“This is an incredible project to be working on,” said Atkins client director Allel Hadri. “It’s not every day we get the opportunity to think about water slides and attractions, so our architects and engineers have to adopt a completely different mindset.”

“Beyond this, we have to consider all aspects of infrastructure design right down to shaded walkways and methods of queuing, while also ensuring the facility meets our client’s sustainability targets.”

“This facility will provide a unique entertainment opportunity for people of all ages, enabling families and individuals alike to indulge in a thrilling entertainment experience that reflects our rich maritime culture,” said Aldar Properties chief commercial officer Mohammed Al Mubarak.

The Water Park will join a range of world-class recreational attractions at Yas Island such as Ferrari World Abu Dhabi, the world’s first Ferrari theme park and largest attraction of its kind, which opens on 28th October.

Aldar has already received the conceptual planning approval for the Park from the Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council and has started the prequalification process for main contractors for the project. Construction work will begin in July 2010, with the project scheduled for delivery in 2012.
