Atkins boosts recruitment programme as workload soars

A strong set of trading results has prompted consultant Atkins to embark on a recruitment drive, the firm told NCE last week.

Strong performances across all sectors, particularly in rail and water, supported by big contract wins including work on High Speed 2 mean the company has 1,200 vacancies across its UK business.

“I’m cautiously optimistic about the UK market,” said Atkins UK chief executive officer David Tonkin.

“We have seen a pick up across all sectors. Rail and water are well funded; aerospace and energy are also strong,” he added.

Atkins posted a 14% rise in its half yearly pretax profits to £50.4M in the six months to 30 September 2012.

This was up from £44.2M in the same period last year.

But the firm’s revenue dropped 3.2% from £842.9M last year to £815.7M this year.

The consultant also is upping its graduate intake.

It recruited 240 this year - up from 120 last year - and is now seeking to take on another 350. Atkins now employs 9,169 staff.
