'Nice ideas with a slim light structure, simple lines and a smooth finish that could have been developed. Some concern was expressed that there may be difficulties in finding sufficient space in the central reserve to accommodate the support, especially the inclined legs, and still avoid impact loading. The solution may be to increase the capacity of the span member and omit the central support altogether.'
The assessors also said that fabricating the inclined leg frames could be difficult and pointed out that rail mounted access platforms had already been tested on cantilevered signs on the M3 and found to be unsatisfactory.
Plans to enclose the signs in darkened glass cladding were considered 'elegant' but were expected to need several years to develop fully.
The cable net idea was considered 'great fun' but the judges expressed reservations about the effects of glare and refracting sunlight. They also felt that by the time the LED net screen idea could be developed it would be overtaken by advances in 'in car' technology which could make road mounted signals redundant.
The panel described the precast 'dog bone' foundation slab as 'simple' 'neat' and 'easy to install' and suggested it be developed further. 'There is excellent potential for use on items other than gantries, particularly temporary works'. The potential of the LED Blipvert is also being considered by the Highways Agency.
