The judges considered all three main proposals from this team capable of being developed immediately for construction.
'The transparency between signals of the first two solutions (aluminium truss and steel truss) by hiding the control equipment behind the signals, was welcomed. Although the 3m depth of the (aluminium) truss might be found to be intrusive, the coloured precast support proposed . . . was striking and it conveniently masked the access ladders, cable runs and ancillary equipment boxes which no other designs addressed.
'The folded concrete plate design also had the advantage of being stable during erection, and able to be filled with mass concrete for impact resistance when required. Concern was, however, expressed about the method of fixing between the propped cantilever truss and this thin concrete support. The truss member consisted of a light weight low maintenance aluminium span assembled from a kit of parts, which would allow for dismantling and easy reuse once taken down.'
The judges felt the steel truss had the disadvantage of being difficult to assemble and dismantle. But they said that the knock-out central reservation leg was a good idea although 'in development the leg would have to be frangible and fixed at the base to avoid loose elements flying across the carriageway in an accident.'
The Jumbo steel beam design was seen as the obvious and workable solution for simple goalpost sign gantries.
