'The design has the practical clean lines of pure classical simplicity which the judges wished they could have had for adoption for signal only gantries 20 years ago,' said the panel. 'The provision of louvres to unite elements and limit wind loading and the use of composite materials for these and other secondary components to reduce maintenance liability is innovative and elegant.
'The design is not however, so suitable for directional signs. The fold down leg cleverly avoided some of the other construction problems in the central reservation, and suited erection by mobile closure. The panel was also enthusiastic about the idea for a retractable ladder since this element is usually awkward and intrusive.
There was concern that the impact requirements for supports in narrow central reservations could undermine the elegance of the design. But the assessors recognised that the problem could be avoided on urban roads with lower speed limits and by spanning across both carriageways.
The assessors said they were also disappointed that 'greater use had not been made of advanced composite materials, though they accepted that the designers had adopted steel for the main structural elements only after careful deliberation. Overall they felt the design 'was particularly appropriate for repeated use'.
