'This cable stay design addressed the fundamentals of gantry design over live roads. The inherent long span capability enabled the mast to be located well clear of the verge to avoid problems and cost associated with impact resistance and access for construction of foundations near the hard shoulder. It also enables the design to be used on sites requiring very long spans, such as at the divergence of sliproads.'
The assessors noted the advantages of rotating the mast into position after sign installation and the use of the knock out leg in the central reservation. They pointed out that the knock out leg would need to be frangible so that loose elements did not fly into the carriageway during an accident.
Some of the assessors expressed concern about the 'height of the mast and the drama of the design though it was noted that the mast was of similar height to lamp columns'.
The panel liked the proposal for access ladder steps welded to the mast but expressed concern about the discontinuous access walkway, 'since the current state of signal technology would require a continuous access walkway, which might damage the overall elegance of the design'.
Having said that, they noted that the design's appearance could improve as advances in technology eliminate the need for fixed permanent maintenance access.
In conclusion the panel said: 'This design should prove particularly beneficial with long span requirements and where the road is in cutting or on embankment, which for other designs would be the most onerous of sites.'
