R Kewell (NCE 15 March) asked how Bob Kiley was appointed Commissioner of Transport for London 'about whom I know nothing except what I read'.

Transport for London, which Ken Livingstone chairs, appointed PriceWaterhouse Coopers to conduct an international executive search and advertising exercise for this and the other six top posts we needed to fill. Advertisements were placed in the Evening Standard and the national and international press. A description of TfL, job description and person specification were also sent to interested applicants and posted on the GLA website.

Our selection panel of six TfL board members was chaired by Ken and included Stephen Glaister, Steve Norris and Susan Kramer as well as an advisor from PWC and an independent scrutineer from London University.

Bob Kiley was appointed as the best in a field of high quality candidates running major transport systems around the globe. Everything that has happened since more than confirms our confidence in Bob's appointment.

Dave Wetzel, Vice chair, Transport for London, Windsor House, 42-50 Victoria Street, London SW1H 0TL
