Alan Smith has been appointed as director of communications at the Institution of Civil Engineers. He will take up the post in November, after spending 10 years as head of public relations at Edmund Nuttall.

Dave Torrance and Paul Eastwood have been appointed associates at consultant Joynes Pike & Associates.

Philip Staten is promoted to technical director and Tom Edwards is promoted to divisional director (Northern UK and Ireland) at geosynthetics manufacturer Maccaferri. The firm has just opened an office in Belfast, Northern Ireland and moved to new premises in Perth, Scotland.

Bill Laidlaw has become chairman of geosynthetics testing firm BTTG. He replaces Barry Spencer who retired in July.

Philip Hill has been appointed managing director of Weeks Group. He was previously managing director of Lawrence Hewitt Partnership, the firm Weeks acquired last year.

Ian Cutler has joined geotechnical and geoenvironmental consultant Card Geotechnics.
